This etched portrait, made around 1657, depicts Abraham Francen, an Amsterdam apothecary, art dealer and close friend of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) who later helped settle the artist's finances after his bankruptcy. Rembrandt shows Francen absorbed among prints and drawings, a fitting tribute to a man who shared his own passion for collecting art. It stands among the most personal of Rembrandt's many etched portraits of friends and patrons.
