This etched portrait shows Abraham Francen, an Amsterdam apothecary, art collector and one of Rembrandt's most loyal friends, seated among his prints and curiosities. Rembrandt (1606–1669) reworked the plate again and again, deepening the light and intimacy until it became one of the most searching portraits in all of printmaking.
