“The Three Crosses,” made in 1653, is considered one of Rembrandt van Rijn's greatest prints — a dramatic drypoint of Christ's crucifixion, flanked by the two thieves, as a shaft of divine light pierces the darkened sky above a chaotic crowd of soldiers and mourners. Rembrandt (1606–1669) reworked the copper plate over roughly a decade, each state growing darker and more turbulent, using the rough, velvety burr of drypoint to create an intensity closer to painting than to conventional printmaking.
