Christ Driving the Money Changers — Rembrandt Tapestry Blanket

This 1635 etching by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) captures the biblical moment when Christ, whip raised, drives the money changers from the temple in a swirl of toppling tables and scattering figures. Rembrandt based the composition on a painting he had made a decade earlier as a teenager, reworking the scene with the vigorous, calligraphic linework that defined his etchings of the 1630s. The dramatic subject let him explore movement and righteous anger with unusual energy.
