Made in 1658, this etching by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) shows a model reclining and curled away from the viewer, rendered with the rich, painterly drypoint technique Rembrandt developed late in his career. Printed on warm-toned paper, the impression shows Rembrandt working through one of etching's great technical challenges — capturing skin and shadow within a darkened interior — with a virtuosity unmatched among his printmaking contemporaries.
