The Story in the Margin
In this etching from around 1657, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) reimagined the Adoration of the Shepherds as an intimate nocturne, the darkness of the stable broken only by the soft glow of a single oil lamp illuminating Joseph reading beside the sleeping Mary and Christ child. Rembrandt returned often to nighttime religious scenes late in his career, using etching, drypoint and burin together to build a mood of hushed, glowing stillness rather than the sharp contrasts of his earlier work.
