The individualist painter Shitao, a descendant of the Ming imperial family who lived through the dynasty's fall, painted this homage to the Qinhuai River around 1695 for a friend with whom he had once travelled to its historic sites near Nanjing. By the late Ming and early Qing dynasties the Qinhuai had become the gathering place of scholars, poets, and pleasure-boats, and its banks were saturated with centuries of literary memory — exactly the kind of layered, half-imagined "reminiscence" that Shitao's idiosyncratic brushwork was suited to capture.
