Richardson's Jager. I. Male Adult. II — Antique Bird Print

Richardson's Jager was John James Audubon's name, honoring the Arctic naturalist Sir John Richardson, for the bird now classified as the Parasitic Jaeger, a hawk-like seabird that breeds on the tundra of the far north. True to its modern name, the jaeger is a practiced aerial pirate, chasing terns and gulls in flight until they drop their catch, which the jaeger then steals in midair. This plate of an adult male appears in Audubon's The Birds of America (1827-1838), engraved and hand-colored by Robert Havell Jr.
