River Village: Fisherman's Joy is a fan painting by Zhao Mengfu, one of the most celebrated Chinese painters and calligraphers of the Yuan dynasty, created around 1302–03 near the end of his life. A descendant of the defeated Song imperial family who nonetheless served the Mongol court of Kublai Khan, Zhao blended the flat, watery landscapes of southern China with the spiky trees and rough rock textures of the northern painting tradition, populating the scene with fishermen and a traveler leading a donkey along the shore. The painting, mounted as an album leaf, is now held at the Cleveland Museum of Art and remains a touchstone of Yuan-dynasty literati painting.
