River Village in a Rainstorm is a hanging scroll painting by Lu Wenying, a court painter active in China during the Hongzhi era of the Ming dynasty, roughly 1488 to 1505. Working in the tradition of the Zhe school, which drew on the dramatic, large-scale landscapes of the Southern Song academy, Lu depicted sweeping diagonal bands of wind and rain across a riverside settlement, its pavilions and rooftops glimpsed through the storm. The painting is now held in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, and its atmospheric rendering of weather in motion remains one of the striking achievements of Ming-dynasty court painting.
