The royal fern (Osmunda regalis) is one of Europe's largest ferns, sending up fronds that can reach well over a metre from stout, long-lived rhizomes rooted in boggy woodland and stream banks. Its fertile fronds bear rust-colored spore clusters held above the sterile leaves like a crown, giving rise to both its common name and the old nickname "flowering fern." The plant was once so heavily harvested for its fibrous roots, used as a growing medium for orchids, that wild populations declined in many regions, and its bold, architectural form has long made it a favorite subject for fern illustrators.
