Sea Anemones — Antique Natural History Print

A sea anemone is a solitary polyp — a columnar body topped with a ring of tentacles armed with stinging cells — anchored to rock or sand in every ocean, from shallow reefs to the deep sea. Many species host symbiotic algae in their tissues for extra nourishment and form well-known partnerships with clownfish and hermit crabs, which shelter unharmed among the tentacles. Haeckel's plate for the order Actiniae, published in his 1899-1904 atlas Kunstformen der Natur, depicts the genus Heliactis in the radiating, jewel-like detail he brought to Cnidaria throughout the book.
