The Sharp-tailed Grouse ranges across the open grasslands and brushy prairies of the northern United States and Canada, a close cousin of the prairie-chickens but suited to colder country. Each spring, males gather on traditional dancing grounds, called leks, where they stamp their feet and rattle their tails to court females, and in deep winter the birds will burrow into snowdrifts overnight for insulation against the cold. This male-and-female pair was painted by John James Audubon and engraved by Robert Havell Jr. for The Birds of America (1827-1838), the naturalist's monumental double-elephant-folio portrait of North American bird life.

The reproduction quality is the best I have seen anywhere near this price. There is a life to Sharp Tailed Grouse. I. Male. II. Female here that flat reproductions usually kill. The paper on this print is thick and slightly textured, exactly what I wanted. Ten out of ten from me.
