A siphonophore looks like a single animal but is in fact a colony of specialised, genetically identical zooids — some for floating, some for stinging prey, others for digestion or reproduction — all functioning together as one. Its best-known relative, the Portuguese man o' war, drifts on a gas-filled float that acts as a sail, trailing venomous tentacles far below. Haeckel studied the group closely, later publishing a scientific report on the Siphonophorae collected by HMS Challenger, and gave the order five plates across Kunstformen der Natur, as many as any other single group in the atlas.
