The Story in the Margin
“Daniel in the Lions' Den,” painted around 1615 by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), shows the Old Testament prophet surrounded by life-sized lions after being cast into their den for defying a royal decree against prayer. Rubens filled the canvas with the pride of lions rather than any human tormentors, using the animals' raw physical presence — sharpened by lessons learned during his years in Italy — to make Daniel's faith and calm all the more striking. The painting hangs today in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
