South Berwick, in York County, is among the oldest English settlements in Maine, its land granted in the 1630s and its Salmon Falls River location making it an early center of lumber milling and shipbuilding that supplied timber to shipyards throughout New England. The town later became the birthplace and lifelong home of novelist Sarah Orne Jewett, whose stories captured the fading world of Maine's coastal and rural communities in the late 19th century, and her family home, Hamilton House, remains a preserved landmark. South Berwick's combination of colonial-era roots and later literary fame made it a well-documented town in Maine's 19th-century maps and gazetteers.
