This triptych of color woodblock prints, made in 1854 by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861), depicts the scenic coastline at Futamigaura Bay, a site near Ise famous for its paired “wedded rocks” joined by a sacred rope. Kuniyoshi, one of the last great masters of Japanese ukiyo-e, was celebrated for his dynamic warrior prints as well as expansive, imaginative landscapes like this one, made during the final years of the Edo period. The print is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
