Painted around 1650 by Giovanna Garzoni (1600–1670), one of the most accomplished botanical and still-life artists of the Italian Baroque, “Still Life with Birds and Fruit” shows Garzoni's meticulous, jewel-like technique built up from tiny dots of watercolor and gouache. Garzoni, who worked for the Medici family in Florence and traveled across Italy, England and France, was among the first women to build a celebrated career in still-life painting, prized for her exacting eye for texture and natural detail.
