Among the sixty plates in Merian's 1705 Suriname series, the most celebrated shows a flowering pineapple plant surrounded by cockroaches and the life cycle of a butterfly, an image she placed first because she considered the pineapple the finest of tropical fruits. The rest of the series follows the same formula across dozens of other species, from moths to beetles to spiders. This plate, drawn from that body of work, likely shows another Surinamese insect paired with its own host plant.
