Surinam Insects and Plants (12) — Antique Botanical Print

Maria Sibylla Merian self-financed the publication of Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium in Amsterdam in 1705, a lavish folio of sixty hand-colored engraved plates with descriptive text in Latin and Dutch. Each plate paired one or more insects with the Surinamese plant that fed or hosted them, based on observations she made during her two years in the colony. This print reproduces one plate from that series, likely showing an insect at several life stages alongside its plant.
