Susanna and the Elders — Rubens Tapestry Blanket

Painted in 1607 during his second stay in Rome, “Susanna and the Elders” by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) depicts the biblical story of a virtuous woman surprised while bathing by two lecherous elders who threaten to accuse her falsely unless she submits to them. Rubens captures Susanna's shock and shame as one elder gestures for silence, an early work that already shows the dramatic tension and psychological intensity that would define his mature Flemish Baroque style.
