Takigawa was one of the most celebrated courtesans of the Ōgiya, the 'House of Fans,' a leading brothel of Edo's Yoshiwara pleasure quarter, where she and her rival Hanaogi were the district's reigning beauties. Ukiyo-e masters including Kitagawa Utamaro and Chōbunsai Eishi repeatedly chose her as a subject, picturing her at leisure—drying her hair after a bath, smoking a pipe, arranging flowers—rather than at formal display. These prints turned a real, famous woman into an idealized image of Edo-period style and grace, sold to a public that followed Yoshiwara courtesans much as modern audiences follow celebrities.
