“After Wang” here refers to the Yuan-dynasty master Wang Meng (about 1308–1385), one of the most celebrated landscape painters in Chinese history, whose dense, energetic brush style later generations of painters studied and consciously echoed as a mark of respect. The Qing-dynasty painter Wang Hui, a leading figure of the Orthodox School, made several copies of one particular Wang Meng landscape between 1686 and 1712, treating the act of copying as a dialogue with the masters of the past rather than mere imitation. This “after” convention — a later painter openly working in homage to an earlier one — was a respected and common practice in Chinese literati painting, prized for demonstrating mastery of tradition rather than dismissed as unoriginal.
