The Great Temple at Abu Simbel was carved into a Nubian mountainside around 1264 BC under Ramesses II, its facade dominated by four colossal seated statues of the pharaoh. Built to honor the state gods Ra-Horakhty, Ptah, and Amun, it was also a deliberate display of Egyptian power on the frontier with Nubia. In one of the 20th century's great engineering rescues, the entire temple was cut into blocks and relocated to higher ground between 1963 and 1968 to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser after the Aswan High Dam was built.
