The Story in the Margin

On 5 January 1911, Herbert Ponting, official photographer of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's British Antarctic Expedition, discovered a grotto carved into the side of an iceberg near the expedition's base and photographed the ship Terra Nova framed through its glowing blue-green archway. Scott himself noted that Ponting had been "ravished" by the scene. The image remains one of the most celebrated photographs of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration, made a year before Scott and four companions died returning from the South Pole.
