This print illustrates a scene from the Book of Revelation, chapter 11, in which John is given a reed and told to measure the temple of God and its altar before two witnesses appear to prophesy in the city. The act of measuring the temple echoes earlier prophetic visions in Ezekiel and Zechariah, where the dimensions of a sacred building signify God's ownership and protection of it. Apocalyptic temple imagery like this was a recurring subject for illustrated Bibles from the medieval period onward, giving artists a chance to render an imagined vision of the Temple of Jerusalem.
