This gum tempera, ink and gold painting, made around 1560 for the Mughal emperor Akbar's court, illustrates another episode from the Tuti-nama (Tales of a Parrot), in which a magical seven-colored bird brings a precious sable pelt to a pious man as a reward for his devotion. Painted by artists in Akbar's royal workshop during the formative years of Mughal painting, the manuscript's illustrations combine Persian refinement with vivid Indian color and storytelling energy. The page is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
