Dutch draftsman Willem van Mieris created this chalk drawing around 1700 to 1710, showing a man and woman haggling over the price of a bird in a poultry stall. A curtain drawn back above the scene hints that the viewer is glimpsing something private, while a carved relief of playful putti below adds a knowing wink. Market scenes pairing a man and a woman often carried flirtatious undertones in seventeenth and eighteenth-century Holland, a joke well understood by the middle-class patrons who collected them.
