This hand-colored engraving, made in 1807 after a design by Thomas Curtis, comes from “The Botanical Magazine, or Flower Garden Displayed,” a pioneering English periodical founded in 1787 to illustrate ornamental and exotic plants for a growing audience of gardeners and botanists. This plate, showing an umbel-flowering, bulb-bearing orange lily, reflects the golden age of botanical illustration, when precise, hand-colored prints served both scientific and decorative purposes. It is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
