Rembrandt's largest and most daring history painting (1661–62) shows the one-eyed Batavian chieftain Claudius Civilis rallying his men to revolt against Rome, swords meeting over a torch-lit table. Rejected by the Amsterdam town hall and later cut down, the surviving fragment is now a treasure of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
