This plate, Scenographia Systematis Copernicani, comes from Andreas Cellarius's 1660 celestial atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica and is perhaps the single most sought-after image the book produced. It illustrates the heliocentric model Nicolaus Copernicus published in 1543, with the Sun fixed at the center and the Earth demoted to just another planet circling it alongside Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Cellarius even includes a portrait of Copernicus himself in the lower corner holding a globe, a nod to the astronomer whose quiet mathematical treatise eventually reordered the universe.
