The Story in the Margin

Ming-dynasty painter Shen Zhou included the Five Sages Terrace, which crowns the summit of Tiger Hill near Suzhou, in his album Twelve Views of Tiger Hill, painted after 1490. The album leads the viewer on an imagined ascent of the hill, from arrival by boat at its base to the monastery at its top; Shen Zhou, who turned down an official career to paint as a private scholar, is regarded as the founder of the influential Wu School of landscape painting centred on Suzhou.
