The Fool's Spring from Twelve Views — Antique Natural History Print

This is another leaf from Shen Zhou's album "Twelve Views of Tiger Hill," painted after 1490. It shows the Fool's Spring, named for Hanhan, a visually impaired monk who, according to local legend, dug for forty-nine days after a dream told him water lay beneath the hill, and was said to have his sight restored when the spring finally appeared. Shen Zhou, founder of the Wu School of painting, rendered the site in the understated, subtly colored brushwork of his mature style.
