The Large Miseries of War (8) — Antique Historical Print

This etching belongs to The Large Miseries of War (Les Grandes Misères de la guerre), the 1633 series by the French printmaker Jacques Callot. Drawing on the devastation he witnessed when armies overran his native Lorraine during the Thirty Years' War, Callot laid out the whole grim cycle of soldiering — recruitment, plunder, punishment and ruin — in eighteen unflinching plates often called the first true anti-war art.
