This chart is Andreas Cellarius's Haemisphaerium Stellatum Boreale Antiquum, the Northern Celestial Hemisphere of Antiquity, from his 1660 atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica. It maps the northern sky using classical Greco-Roman constellation figures, Hercules, Cygnus, Pegasus, Andromeda, the two Bears, and more, drawn as though the mythological creatures themselves were woven directly into the stars. Cellarius surrounded the hemisphere with cherubs and ribboned banners in the Dutch baroque style that made his star atlas one of the most admired of the seventeenth century.
