Painted in 1847 by William Sidney Mount (1807–1868), “The Power of Music” shows a Black farmhand listening intently to a fiddler and other musicians playing just inside a barn doorway, a scene widely read for its nuanced, sympathetic depiction of a Black listener at a time when American genre painting rarely treated Black subjects with such dignity. Mount, one of the first major American painters to focus on everyday rural and musical life on Long Island, used the painting to explore music's power to cross social boundaries.
