This album leaf comes from "Twelve Views of Tiger Hill," painted after 1490 by Shen Zhou, the Suzhou scholar who turned down official life to become founder of the Wu School of painting. It depicts the Sword Pool, a rock-cut basin on Tiger Hill said to hold three thousand swords buried with King Helu of Wu, the sword-collecting ruler legendarily entombed beneath the hill — one stop among the twelve that Shen Zhou's album guides viewers through, from the boat landing at its foot to the monastery at its summit.
