The Story in the Margin
"The Thousand Acres of Clouds" is a leaf from Ming-dynasty painter Shen Zhou's album Twelve Views of Tiger Hill, painted after 1490 to record a leisurely ascent of the hill just northwest of his native Suzhou. Shen Zhou, founder of the influential Wu School of literati painting, rendered this view in the subtle colour washes of his mature style, using drifting mist to soften the hill's stepped terraces into a scene of quiet, atmospheric depth.
