This gum tempera, ink and gold painting, made around 1560 for the Mughal emperor Akbar's court, illustrates a scene from the Tuti-nama (Tales of a Parrot) in which three suitors quarrel bitterly over which of them deserves the hand of a devotee's daughter. Painted by artists in Akbar's royal workshop during the earliest years of Mughal painting, the manuscript's illustrations are prized for blending Persian delicacy with vivid Indian color and narrative drama. The page is held in the public-domain collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
