This scene comes from The Triumphs of Caesar, Andrea Mantegna's celebrated series of the 1480s that imagined the victory parade of Julius Caesar as a vast Roman procession of soldiers, standards and captured spoils. Painted for the Gonzaga court in Mantua and now at Hampton Court, the Triumphs were endlessly copied and engraved, carrying Mantegna's grave, sculptural vision of antiquity across Europe.
