Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot painted the hill country of Umbria during his travels through Italy in the late 1820s, part of an extended stay in Rome that shaped his lifelong approach to landscape. Working directly from nature in oil sketches before building larger studio compositions, Corot helped establish plein-air observation as a serious method for landscape painters — an approach that would prove deeply influential on the Barbizon painters and, later, the Impressionists.
