The Story in the Margin

Off the coast of Awa Province, tidal currents forced through the narrow Naruto Strait churn into whirlpools that can reach twenty metres across. Hiroshige's view of the phenomenon, from his 1853–56 series Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces, plunges the viewer almost into the vortex itself, the water rendered in rolling bands of blue against a calm, plover-dotted horizon beyond — widely considered the most spectacular design in the series.
