Thornapple (Datura stramonium) is a rank, trumpet-flowered member of the nightshade family, likely native to Mexico and Central America and now naturalized as a weed across much of the world. Its spiny seed pods give the plant its common name, while its American nickname, jimsonweed, recalls an incident at Jamestown, Virginia in 1676, when soldiers sent to suppress Bacon's Rebellion unknowingly ate the leaves in a salad and spent eleven days in a documented stupor. Every part of the plant contains potent tropane alkaloids — atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine — that have made it both a feared poison and, in carefully measured traditional use, a treatment for asthma and pain. Its dramatic white trumpets and wickedly spined fruit have made it a favourite subject for botanical illustrators cataloguing the era's most dangerous garden plants.
