Perched on a granite gorge encircled by the Tagus River, Toledo served as the capital of both the Visigothic kingdom and, later, medieval Christian Spain, prized for centuries as a fortress city that was nearly impossible to approach except by a handful of bridges and gates. It became famous as a center of coexistence and scholarship among Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities, and separately for the fine steel of its swordsmiths, a craft still associated with the city today. Its dramatic silhouette of cathedral towers and fortified walls made it an obvious subject for the European city-view atlases of the 16th and 17th centuries, and it was later immortalized in paint by the Cretan-born artist El Greco, who made the city his home.
