The Story in the Margin

Frederic Edwin Church painted Twilight in the Wilderness in 1860, building the blazing, cloud-streaked sunset from sketches he had made near Mount Katahdin in Maine two years earlier. Church exhibited the canvas alone at a New York gallery rather than in a group show, and its unpeopled, burning sky — painted on the eve of the Civil War — has long been read as a meditation on a nation approaching upheaval. It remains one of the defining images of the Hudson River School's Luminist phase.
