The "Vale of Kashmir" became a fixture of the 19th-century romantic imagination largely through Thomas Moore's wildly popular 1817 poem Lalla Rookh, which described the valley's meadows, lakes, and mountains as a kind of earthly paradise. Western landscape painters who had often never set foot in Kashmir nonetheless painted the valley repeatedly during the Victorian era, drawing on travelers' accounts and Moore's verse to conjure an idealized vision of the Himalayan foothills for audiences captivated by the East.
