Built across more than 100 small islands in a lagoon on Italy's Adriatic coast, Venice was for centuries the wealthiest and most powerful maritime republic in the Mediterranean, its trading fleets and canals making it a natural subject for the great city-view atlases of the 16th and 17th centuries. Cartographers took particular delight in Venice's unique geography, rendering its Grand Canal, the Doge's Palace, and the domes of St. Mark's Basilica from a bird's-eye vantage that captured a city unlike any other in Europe. These printed views circulated widely because Venice itself was a major printing and publishing center, feeding demand for images of its own famous skyline.
