The Story in the Margin

Lake Pepin, a natural widening of the Mississippi River on the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin, became one of the most painted and engraved stops on the river during the 19th century, as steamboats carried tourists upriver past its dramatic bluffs. American landscape artists of the Hudson River School era were drawn to its combination of open water and towering limestone cliffs, producing a wave of romantic river views that helped popularize the upper Mississippi as a destination for scenery-seeking travelers.
