Painted around 1885 during his years in Nuenen in the Netherlands, "Cottages with a Woman Working in the Middle Ground" shows Vincent van Gogh's early fascination with the thatched-roof cottages and hard rural labor of the Brabant countryside, rendered in the dark, earthy palette that defined his work before he moved to Paris. Van Gogh made dozens of studies of these humble cottages, drawn to their weathered, almost organic structures as much as to the peasant life they sheltered. The painting belongs to the somber Nuenen period that preceded his dramatic shift toward bright color under the influence of Impressionism.
