"The Drinkers" is a painting Vincent van Gogh made in February 1890 while a patient at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, copied directly from a black-and-white print after Honoré Daumier. During his final year, confined for long stretches and without live models or new scenery, Van Gogh made a series of paintings translating prints by artists he admired — Daumier, Millet, Delacroix, Rembrandt — into his own vivid color and expressive brushwork, treating the copies as a kind of musical improvisation on another artist's theme. "The Drinkers" reflects this practice, transforming Daumier's satirical genre scene into a study of gesture and color.
